Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a culturally diverse, low-income school our students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, these students come in everyday eager to learn and explore a wide range of topics from World Civilizations, US History, Civics, and current events.
These inquisitive students are explorers, dreamers, and thinkers filled with unlimited potential to one day shape the world they are currently learning about today.
They are from a variety of different economic backgrounds with 100% receiving both free breakfast and lunch. As we continue to live in an age of fast-paced information and a heavy reliance on technology, many students struggle to keep up with the growing trends. Assignments, research, and online collaboration are a challenge when many do not have internet access or the use of technology outside of school. How are we to prepare these 21st Century learners for their futures without equipping them with all of the tools needed to succeed?
My Project
The use of technology is essential to our daily instruction.
Whether they are conducting research, going on a web-quest, creating presentations, catching up on current events or typing essays, all of their activities center around technology.
At the moment, we do not have a full class set of laptops and some of our existing laptops have no chargers, therefore students must work on a rotating schedule to access the technology. Adding two additional Chromebooks, 5 chargers, and 5 headphones will make a difference as it puts us one step closer to being a 1:1 classroom where every student that enters will have their own laptop to use.
We utilize technology to foster online collaboration and enhance the content of our lessons. Students work in small groups to continue to build on the topics presented in class. With each student having online access, it allows them to keep up with their peers and not have to worry about when they will have time to complete their work, especially if they do not have access at home.
