This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach a special education class for students with intellectual disability. Our class is composed of third through fifth graders with exceptional needs. Most of our students are nonverbal, but they are able to communicate using sign language, gestures, and alternative communication devices. I have seven curious students who do not let their disabilities limit them from learning and accessing the world around them. They are eager to learn and share what they know with everyone they meet. They are friendly and very inquisitive. Our students come to school with a positive attitude and enjoy learning and helping one another.
We want to grow healthy students and teach them to contribute to a healthier planet.
Healthy behaviors established during childhood will carry through to adulthood. The planters, soil, and dustpan set will provide students with hands-on learning opportunities and teach them about the importance of rolling up their sleeves and getting ready to transform the world around us. My students will gain insights into sustainable practices like composting, water conservation, and organic gardening through planting. These lessons are crucial in shaping their attitudes toward the environment as they grow. Also, an outdoor garden provides a stimulating, invigorating break from the classroom.
