Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

History needs to come alive for my students. I teach 6th grade in the largest elementary school in my city. Our classroom consists of a portable building with limited access to the internet and even less areas for creativity and imagination.

My students are having a difficult time finding any interest in learning about Ancient Greece. The only spark that I have been able to get out of them is reading the stories about the Greek gods, so I would like to pursue it by having them read a book which is based on the stories of the Gods they have heard about.

I believe by reading as a class Rick Riordan's "Lightning Thief", they will be able to see that the past does have an influence on their lives since the characters are the same age as them.

Reading is so essential for them to be successful in life, and my students have a hard time finding books that they enjoy, so they see reading as a chore rather than a pleasure. I believe this book, which is the first in a series, may help them to see that books not only can teach you but can be fun.
