This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In many urban communities, students are not supplied with the same tools and materials found in more affluent areas. Learning about our past heroes becomes difficult for many young students. I believe that having grade level appropriate biographies will help my students.

My students are dedicated to their development as lifelong learners.

At our school, our students have learned that they have the power to "write the future" and they do so throughout all subject content areas. My students are beginning to see themselves as writers. They commit themselves to taking accountability for their education and work diligently each day to become stronger writers. They are using texts within the classroom as mentor texts to support their own creativity and writing. They are in need of tools that will aid them in grasping the social studies content while using biographies to guide them as writers.

My Project

The biography books I have requested will provide my students with reading materials that challenge and engage them, exercising literacy, comprehension, and creative thinking. My students will be able to each have the opportunity to hear each biography for content, then reread it as a mentor text to support their writing. The wide selection of heroes will allow for choice and inspiration for my students. Your generous donations to our project will influence the lives of my students. With your support and contribution, my students will be able to manage their own learning. They will begin to successfully and confidently navigate the rigorous curriculum. They will be able to focus on understanding content while enjoying a nonfiction read that is at their appropriate reading level.
