My Project

Studies have shown that incorporating YA literature into a classroom in addition to complex novels and texts have increased student engagement and improved students' sense of value and self-efficacy. In addition to Fahrenheit 451, our English 10 team would like to include a novel in which students can see and hear themselves within the text. Basically, when a text is written so that a student is easily able to comprehend it, as a class, we can spend more time discussing and analyzing intricate topics and themes without spending too much time figuring out what the author is saying.

The goals for this project are to encourage students to see themselves within literature and to foster a love of reading.

If students are able to read a text and not only easily relate to the characters but also comprehend what is written then encouraging them to read on their own is more achievable. The Astonishing Color of After also lends itself to some wonderful project based assessments that can show off the students understanding of the material as well as their creativity. In addition to basic comprehension questions and quizzes, students will have the opportunity to engage in Literature Circles where they will discuss the themes that stood out to the them, collaborative projects that will show off their understanding of color symbolism and the lyrical quality of the text, and research projects to help them see the impact of the novel outside of the classroom.

Our high school has nearly 2300 students enrolled in the 2023-2024 school year. We have 49 different languages spoken on this campus. It is our responsibility as educators to make sure each student feels seen and heard on this campus. I believe this novel can be a way for students to be seen and heard.
