President Obama has offered a "teachable moment" for all students across the country, but especially for those in under-served high-need schools. My 10th graders in World Literature, like so many readers, get excited about reading when they can connect narrative to their lives and what's going on in the world right now. As you can imagine, my students in a historically African-American district were as proud of the inauguration of President Obama as much as the rest of the country. They internalized his message of doing the best you can, and I am channeling that enthusiasm to learning in our classroom.
"A Thousand Splendid Suns" is the perfect title to both encourage learning through high-interest material and to bring a discussion about current events and foreign policy into the classroom. Our biggest obstacle isn't motivating students, it's our school's tragic lack of books and available funds due to recent budget cuts.
This project will not only benefit my students by preparing them for college and state-tests through close reading, textual analysis and critical writing, it will prepare them to make informed decisions about the most increasingly relevant politics of our day.
Your can make it possible for students in a high-need, inner-city school to reach out across the globe and connect with vastly different cultures through reading. Your help will ensure a future generation of engaged and informed young adults, who are ready to grapple with the problems of the 21st Century.
