Connecting STEM and Literature Using Storybook STEM (Part 2)
My students need these great (and a few award winning) hardcover books so that they can last us all year while referencing them and completing our Storybook STEM projects.
We are a small, public, charter school located in the rural town of Clarksburg in the Sacramento Delta region. Our students come from many communities up and down the Sacramento River, which means we serve students from a variety of backgrounds and needs. We provide services to a significant EL population and a growing Special Education population.
We are always pushing our leaders and scholars to do their best!
Our school serves students in grades K-6 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers and a safe learning environment.
My Project
My students are developing a love for both STEM activities and reading. I want to continue to develop this love by connecting the two. Each STEM activity that they will create hands-on with teamwork and problem solving skills, relates to a specific storybook. For example, after the students read the book "The Recess Queen", they will then create their own playground using various supplies and incorporating STEM principles.
These books will connect their love of reading to their love of science, technology, engineering, and math.
Reading the books provides my students another opportunity to practice their reading fluency and open their eyes to all of the wonderful books that are in the world. Then the students are able to create a STEM based project in a team. Not only will my students be learning about reading, math and science, they will also be collaborating, working through problems, and learning that it is great to make a mistake, as those are the best learning tools.
