Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them" - Aristotle This quote is relevant to this project as the materials requested will give students the opportunity to learn by doing, and not just by watching.

The school that I am working at is a public charter school, and our mission is to serve these students and prepare them for college and adult life.

Our school is also a technology and project-based school, where students learn through different technology and hands-on activities. Most of the students that come to our school are first generation students to go to college as well.

My Project

A big component of our school is the project based learning aspect. This semester in Geometry, students will take on an environmental challenge tying both science and math for our "Killer Tree" project. Since tall slanted pine trees surround our school, the first part of the project will be determining the slant of the tree and whether it poses a potential danger through indirect measurements. The giant geometric tools requested will be helpful as to model part of the process to students. The second part of the project is the environmental aspect. With partial help from the Chemistry/Environmental health teacher, students will also conduct field studies, such as looking at leaf scorch and the soil pH. The materials such as gloves, beakers, and low form porcelain crucible will be used to help collect samples and run this experiment. The end goal is a student proposal to determine hazardous trees, and possible solution to keep other trees healthy, hence a clicker for presentation.

Through the donation, students will benefit through a multitude of ways.

The biggest benefit is connecting science to math, as students generally view math as an alienated subject. This project also includes different real life applications, as students can determine if a tree is hazardous and if it needs any immediate attention. Since our school is by some tall and slanted pine tree, a big storm can potentially top the tree over and cause big damages to our school or nearby houses.
