Help me give my students sets of classroom novels that they can read and are not falling apart. These novels are selected because they focus on issues that students face in their lives.
Kelley Gallagher once wrote, " to become a lifelong reader, one has to do a lot of varied and interesting reading." at the high school level it is sometimes difficult to engage students in a good book unless you can connect them to the books.
Many of our 14-17-year-old students are facing struggles daily and they do not connect to books because they don't see the relevance to their lives.
This disconnection hinders their ability to seek out books on their own to find a passion for reading. We are hoping to change that mentality by providing our different levels of students some classics that they can connect to their own lives.
My Project
We are not able to provide our classes with clean, well-constructed novels for class reading and discussions. We got together as a department and selected three novels that our students could study and relate to their own lives in some way.
We want to start a fire inside our students using Fahrenheit 451 , Frankenstein and To Kill a Mockingbird; classic novels that can be taught in a manner in which that student can make personal connections to their lives and the world within the pages.
As a department, we are hoping to spark interest in reading that will last beyond the wall of our building.
