My Students
I teach in a diverse, Title I school in a suburb of Washington, DC. Preschool is often the children's first time being away from their parents, so I strive to make it a fun and engaging environment.
My students are three, four, and five-year-olds with special needs.
The children have a variety of disabilities, including Down syndrome, blindness, Autism, developmental delay, and language disorders.
I also have a few students who are typically developing who serve as peer models for language and socialization. My students come from culturally and linguistically diverse families and many face socio-economic challenges.
My Project
This project is about family engagement. Many of my students do not have access to high-quality open-ended toys in their homes. Some children spend up to six hours each day with screens- tablets, phones, or watching television. I know that young children need to play with appropriate toys to develop math, science, language, and problem solving skills.
With the support of generous donors, I will host a family learning night to show families how to help their child learn with open-ended building toys.
I will invite parents and children to participate in exploration and play with a variety of building toys that we use at school. My colleagues and I will model how to use the toy sets and inform parents of the educational benefits of each set. We will also create handouts for parents giving tips and ideas to enrich play at home. Each family will be able to choose a toy to keep and use in their home.
I regularly send books home with my students because I know the value of early literacy development. It is equally important that children have creative and exciting toys to use at home to develop their early math, design, and problem solving abilities, especially because they spend so few much of their time at home.
