Connecting Place and History through Hands-On Mapping
The cost of MAP Asia from Rand McNally is $488, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
Place is everything. As a social studies teacher it is so important to connect PLACE with history. All my units of study start with a geography activity involving mapping covering the region involved in our studies. Students need to be able to understand PLACE and be able to navigate it.
In order to help my students have a better understanding of place, I would like to use hands-on mapping activities in my classroom. The benefit of using hands on mapping programs such as the Rand McNally versions is to provide students with the opportunities to map the geography of the locations and regions within a unit of study. I have used hands-on mapping activities in the past with great success. Students are able to follow the trade routes of the Silk Road. These activities allow students to analyze the geography of place as a staging area for history. Each student has a write-on desktop map to interact with as we talk about the geography of a target region and make historical connections.
Hands-on mapping activities provides each student a write-on map to use for completing step-by-step lessons about specific sub-topics in our units of study. Hands-on mapping activities further provide geography skill builders for students.
Using hands-on mapping activities assists students with developing a better understanding of geography, the importance of place, and connecting geography and history.
The materials for this proposal would include one map activity program (MAP) for Asia. This kit can be used by both 7th and 8th graders for different content standards related to world and United States history. I have approximately 180 students who would benefit from the materials. Since the MAP for Asia curriculum set is a reusable product my future students could be counted as potential users.
