Connecting Our Lives to Our Changing Country

My students need a classroom library of laptops. We would use them to research and examine current events and to write their own persuasive essays.

My Students

My students in New York have newly arrived from countries such as the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Ecuador, China, Yemen and Pakistan.They are very eager to learn English, U.S. history and everything they can to get used to their new homes. I am constantly impressed by their work ethic and resilience.

Many of my students come from low-income communities which makes having technological resources for them at school essential.

Many do not have access to the Internet or computers at home. As a result they handwrite essays and projects or type them onto their phones. Currently we do not have enough laptops for each student. Working in groups greatly hinders the quality of work that they could produce.

My Project

My English Language Learners are learning a whole new language, culture and history. In order to do this they need to learn about current events. These laptops would provide them with the means by which to research important topics like immigration, climate change, charter schools and New York City policies.

My students would be able to apply the knowledge they acquire through research in order to use the writing process to write persuasive essays.

As of now I am using photocopied articles which hinder student independence. Your donation would allow their research and essays to extend to topics and details that are currently impossible. Their expertise in research and persuasive essays would be beneficial in all of their humanities courses and in their use of academic English.
