Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend an inner-city elementary school in a low socioeconomic community. Many are from single-parent homes, live in multi-family homes, live in subsidized housing, qualify for free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch and have other obstacles that they face on a daily basis.
Despite these obstacles, the one constant is that they all come to school ready and eager to learn.
My students are at a point in their life where they are learning how to be responsible, respectful and safe, by keeping themselves and our classroom organized.
My Project
Imagine sitting in a classroom and hearing your teacher talk about all these things that you have no interest in. Why is it important to learn about the life cycles? Why do we need to learn all these Math things?
Now imagine being able to connect life cycles to your world by observing the life cycle of an ant in an ant farm.
Imagine being able to see how important adding those numbers are when you're shopping for that perfect item. Imagine reading about something that's going on in your world that relates to what you are learning about in class.
Suddenly, it all falls into place. My students need subscriptions to "Time for Kids" to help them make these connections as well as sand for our ant farm and an HDMI cable to help us create and observe experiences to solidify our learning!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
