My Students
In first grade, learning how to read can be very difficult. My first graders come into my room with different ability levels when it comes to their reading. I have 18 students, who all come to me with different backgrounds. I have several children whose families speak a different language at home. Some of my students have a lot of support from home, however, some of my students do not get the support at home. I want to offer them all the tools they need to become successful readers.
My Project
One of the best ways to grab my student's attention is by reading them a story. I want to use literature to connect the different math strategies that we will be learning. I will also use these books to give students a chance to hear myself read fluently, which is great for my beginning readers.
These books will be used to open each math lesson and grab my students' attention.
As I read the stories aloud to my students, I will begin introducing them to the new math skill that we will be learning through that lesson. Students will also be given the chance to explore these stories on their own during our fluency time in our classroom.
