My Students

What is our favorite thing to read when we get on the Internet? We love to go to websites that will tell us what is going on in the world. Kids love the same thing! And now, with these Time magazines geared toward kids, students have an extra bit of incentive to learn to read!

My students come from a variety of backgrounds, many from lower to middle income, and they often do not have any books at home to read.

The only reading material they have access to is what they see in my classroom. Our student population is 40% second language. They are good kids though, and they do love to learn and they try hard. I am looking for tools that will engage them and connect them to reading, such as these magazines!

My Project

I recently went to a Writing training, and the trainer said that 40-60% of the reading material I have in my classroom should be non-fiction. These magazines would be an excellent way of making that happen for my students. Connecting real-world events with literacy and learning to read would make my students want to read. Additionally, there are maps, charts, and graphing in these materials which is a common core standard for 2nd grade, and I could meet this requirement through these magazines.

We simply do not have the funding for educational supplementary materials such as Time magazines in our budget.

I would be so honored if a donor would allow me to bring these exciting, colorful materials into my classroom, so that I could bring the real world to my students, while encouraging them to read. Thank you so much!
