My Students
As my students enter my room they are greeted with a motivational poster, "Today is a Great Day to Learn Something New!" Connecting with students around the world will promote a positive and engaging learning atmosphere.
My students are from a suburban school in Pittsburgh.
The school consists of kindergarten through sixth grade, approximately 400 students. Although not a wealthy district, teachers make every effort to utilize technology to energize our students' learning environment. Our district incorporates Common Core lessons to ensure our students are prepared for the future. The children I work with are struggling readers who need to overcome their difficulties with reading. I like to incorporate research based strategies, technology and books about the environment and animals to motivate my students to work harder and reach their goals. Watching my students grow as readers and realize they can impact their future is priceless.
My Project
My students will take part in the Global Read Aloud Project. In order to do so technology and copies of the selected books are needed. Students will have the opportunity to read quality books, as well as connect with students globally. Last year more than 30 countries on 6 continents participated with over 144,000 students. As students share their experiences they will learn we are all connected. The selected books also lend themselves to developing empathy toward others. My first experience in bringing real-world lessons to my students occurred in 2011 when participating in the 10,000 Islands Dolphin Projects Environmental Studies Program (www.dolphinprojecteducation.org). As a result, I quickly embraced incorporating technology into my lessons. My experience transformed my outlook as a teacher. I am eager to participate in the Global Read Aloud Project and watch my students grow as readers and empathetic learners.
As Benjamin Franklin stated, "Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn." I know with certainty that by connecting with the real world my students are learning valuable skills that will motivate them to read more.
By allowing opportunities to communicate globally my students will begin to view the world through the eyes of others.
