Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class consists of 36 fifth graders who are self-motivated, creative, and curious. The students love educational experiences that bring the classroom and learning to life for them.
My students are excited to be able to have opportunities that help bring our curriculum to life and that provide life experiences for them.
I teach at a Title I school where my students come from low income areas, but come to school eager and ready to learn. They are hard working students who try their best at everything they do. They may come from homes that may or may not provide educational experiences outside of school. These fifth grade students need to have access to educational experiences that other students at affluent schools have access to.
My Project
I use novels to help my students connect to what we are learning in Social Studies. In fifth grade our emphasis is on early American history. We are requesting a class set of the novel "Sign of the Beaver".
With the novel "Sign of the Beaver", we will connect our unit on settlers moving to areas where Native Americans call home.
Using this novel helps students connect what they have read in our Social Studies book to what it was like for settlers and Native Americans as people move to new territories.
Students connect because it is about boys around their age. Students enjoy reading books that they can picture themselves as characters.
