Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade at Valle Vista in San Jose. My school is 49% free lunch, and 40% are English Language Learners I currently have 20 students in my class. My students range in reading ability between grades K through 2 and are working diligently to become fluent readers. I am looking for ways for my students to be able to gain knowledge through resources available outside the classroom. I would love each of my students to have access to a Scholastic News magazine subscription. Many of my students have limited knowledge and exposure to current events. This would enable me to connect the important current events with the reading curriculum, and make their reading more meaningful and exciting. The school PTA has been paying for these subscriptions, but with major cuts in funding, that is no longer a possibility. I am therefore requesting that you would consider funding these publications for my students.
