Help me give my students a functional and meaningful way to access their curriculum at school and then generalizing that information in the home by utilizing modified materials and engaging manipulatives.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The motto at our school is “Supporting Student Strengths with Passion, Purpose, and Professionalism”. This project focuses on fostering students’ strengths by adapting materials, so all students can access their curriculum. I created this project because I found a unique need for supplies that will help me modify materials for students, which will help engage and motivate the students. Many of the students I work with come from limited resources and have behavioral, medical, and academic needs. Some of the students live in group/foster homes and it can be a challenge to find motivating activities that will engage them. In addition many students enjoy hands on learning materials that they can manipulate.
Students at this school access their curriculum in unique ways (VOD access, picture icons, gestures, AAC technology, vocalizations, verbalizations, communication core boards, and other functional methods of communication).
My Project
Velcro and Lamination:
I adapt many books by laminating them and using velcro to attach the icons.
This makes the book more durable, easy to clean, and allows it to be interactive with icons and target numerous speech goals. Additional books and materials (communication boards) can be made and sent home to support communication.
Fox In the Box:
Positional concepts is such an important speech goal for my preschool students this year. Not only will this activity help their receptive and expressive vocabulary development, but it will also help with orientation in space and direction following concepts. The manipluatives provided from this resource will allow my students hands on practice. Parents will be able to generalize concepts learned from these materials to help with direction following at home.
Lucas the Lion:
For my nonverbal students, this resource will be such a fun motivator for them to become familiar with VODs and other touch talkers. Students can relate their communicative situation to Lucas the Lion and explore the included device before generalizing the newly acquired concepts to other devices. This device will have a positive impact on students engaging with their communication systems at school and at home.
Recordable Answer Buzzers:
These recordable answer buzzers will be placed around the room with simple messages that will allow nonverbal students to make comments throughout the day. For example, “open” would be recorded and fixed by the door, so all students needing to access that buzzer have the opportunity. These can also be sent home, so students will be able to have to their language system both on campus and off if needed.
Extension Cable:
Many of our students are in equipment and require extra space to access. These cables will let parents see interactive lessons for all to explore.
