My Project
Combining art and literacy in an adaptive art class empowers students by nurturing both creative expression and literacy skills simultaneously. Through art, students can visually interpret stories, poems, and concepts, fostering a deeper understanding and engagement with the text. Likewise, literacy activities such as reading, writing, and storytelling provide a foundation for creative exploration, enriching the artistic process with narrative depth and linguistic nuances. This integration not only enhances cognitive development but also cultivates empathy, critical thinking, and self-expression, fostering a holistic approach to learning that celebrates the unique abilities and perspectives of each student. Ultimately, the power of connecting art and literacy lies in its ability to unlock a world of imagination, communication, and personal growth for learners of all abilities. I have seen this impact in my classroom, as I had an art and literacy project generously funded through donor's choose. The success I've seen inspired me to look up more books to incorporate. Many of my students are nonverbal, yet have found ways to demonstrate and communicate literacy comprehension through art.
