My 46 students make connections every day with what they are reading but they have very little in the way of non-fiction books. Help my students become diverse readers!
I am a Reading teacher for 46 fourth graders.
They read anywhere from the second to seventh grade level. Due to the enormous range of capabilities, we are in dire need of a multitude of levels. My school is a public, Title 1 school where most of the students don't have books at home and their parents work 2-3 jobs. They have very little support at home and are in desperate need of enrichment. They want to learn, but don't have the materials to do so.
My Project
I am beginning a new program in my class based upon The Daily Cafe/ Daily 5. In this program, students are placed in reading strategy groups based on their areas of weakness. Leveled readers are used for students to make connections and learn their skills. Post-its are placed within the books when they have used certain strategies being taught. Then these strategies are discussed with the teacher at individual conferences. The copy paper is used to create graphic organizers based on these skills.
I have been teaching for 13 years now and I really think that this new program has merit.
I have always taught Reading based on the basal reader with a high, middle and low group. This never seemed to address the underlying problems. Through this new program, I think that my 46 students' reading weaknesses will be addressed in a more efficient manner. Eventually, by using these strategies, students will become stronger independent readers.
