Connect a Kindergartener to Books

My students need two portable CD players to listen to books on CD and a printer and ink to print out their stories once they compose and type them on the computer.

My Students

Do you believe instilling a passion for reading is what teaching kindergarten is all about? Helping children build that foundation allows them to experience places they may never have the opportunity to go. Listening to fluent readers helps them to enjoy and learn how to be fluent themselves.

I teach in a title I school where most of the children have very little experience with books or technology.

Many of them have not been read to in their early years and their language development is weak. Some of them do not know more that one or two letters when they start school. They enjoy learning and come to school excited to take part in whatever we offer.

My Project

Listening to books, as many as possible, helps to develop language skills. While I read books throughout the day, when I am busy teaching a small reading group, the learning centers that most of the children want to go to are the listening center (I only have one) and the computer (I have two), but no printer. With the two CD players I am requesting, it would allow six more children a day to rotate through the listening centers and hear at least one more book. With the printer and ink, students will be able to publish the little stories that they write later in the year. My students will be more successful as their language skills improve and they gain confidence in their writing as they publish their stories.

Your donations will help start these kindergarten students off on the right foot, giving them the foundation that they need to be successful in school.

Ultimately, it will raise test scores while instilling a love of learning.
