Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When my first graders first come to me, they are still nervous Kindergartners, but inside of them there is an excitement for building upon the reading and writing strategies they learned in the past year. First grade can be intimidating, but I want to provide them with a safe, fun place to learn!
My students attend a school in an urban community; vibrant, culturally rich and consisting of many lower-middle-class families.
The school is infamous for being low-performing, however that is changing, and I truly believe that the community is seeing our progress and wants to be a part of it. The school is filled with educators and staff that genuinely and deeply care for their students and their families, and works extremely hard for their well-being.
My Project
My students absolutely LOVE having books read to them, but these books will also be accessible for them as resources to learn from. My hope is that the books will spark creativity and confidence in them as they are building upon their own writing and learning how to read. I want them to be motivated and inspired by elements of the book and feel confident that they can read and create their own pieces of writing. The markers will be used to provide bright anchor charts for Reader's and Writer's Workshop and the incentive charts will help continue their motivation as the year goes on.
Unfortunately, many students in my classroom aren't so lucky to have been read to daily before coming to school for many varying factors.
Every day still I have students whose only chance to be read to or to read or write is in the classroom. I want to provide multiple, wonderful reading experiences for my students because if in my classroom is the only opportunity they currently have to experience and fall in love with books and stories, I want it to be as rich an experience as possible.
