Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Walking into our school, you will find a diverse group of kids. Many of my students are English language learners, which means they are learning how to read, write, and speak English.
Our classroom is in an urban environment, filled with kids from all walks of life.
We are a Title I-funded school, and our whole school receives free breakfast and lunch. I have a few students with troubled homes, which makes me work harder to create an environment where every child feels safe and able to learn the skills necessary to be ready for middle school and beyond.
My Project
The best way for young learners to hone their mathematical thinking is with math manipulatives. Providing students concrete ways to compare and operate with numbers in math contribute to well-grounded, and interconnected math concepts.
I want my students to have these two sided counters, erasable number lines, and math games so they can use them to develop crucial math concepts.
These manipulatives and games provide multiple ways students can represent adding/subtracting, multiplying/dividing and fractions in concrete ways. Students will be able to share with each other, and show exactly how they solved the math problems. This will also help develop speaking and language skills critical for the English language learners that are in my class.
