My Project
My students are amazing artists who hail from all five boroughs of the city and come together for a full high school and conservatory training. When they get to senior year and college applications, they rely on teachers to write letters of recommendation for them. Our teachers work tirelessly, often carrying a roster of 170 students or more. Of course they add letters of rec to their endless to-do lists.
Each year I teach students to handwrite thank-you notes to their teacher recommenders.
This is an important way to acknowledge the investment these teachers have made in their students' lives and college process. It's also a real life skill and a dying art.
I like to have a variety of thank-you notes and pens available so they can pick one that suits them or their teacher. Then I provide examples of thank-you notes and offer to proofread or give feedback on them. I put the notes in teachers' boxes or students deliver them personally. It's a beautiful way to cap our students' senior year.
