This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In Second Grade, it is important that we teach young scholars HOW to think. They need the chance to explore, to discover WHY we do what we do when we add, subtract, multiply, or divide. Why do we "carry a 1"? Why cross one out, write one less above it, add 1 in front of the other number, yada yada yada? If we understand WHY we're doing these steps, we can figure out WHAT procedures to follow.

At this age, kids still need experience with concrete models so they can form more abstract ideas about what they're really doing with the numbers.
