Computers are a wonderful tool for learning. They can open up a world of possibility and be used to create many educational experiences for young learners. One such way is the use of interactive, education-based software programs, which can make lessons come to life right there on the screen.
My students are energetic, fascinating, and eager to learn.
I am a fifth year teacher in a K to 8 urban, public school. We serve a student population that is 98% African American and 2% Anglo-American. 86.3% of the student population qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch, and about 10% receive Special Education Services.
I myself am a Special Education Teacher, providing Learning Support services to students in grades 4 through 8. It is a high needs area of instruction in a high needs school.
As a self-contained teacher, I am responsible for teaching all subjects to my kids. All of my students have learning disabilities, and I provide them academic support for reading and math, subjects which they can find very challenging. When faced with challenges like this, my students unfortunately often either shut down or give up. They need a way to get invested in what they are learning. Technology is a great way to get them invested.
My Project
Thanks to donors out there like you, my students recently received a brand new computer for our classroom. We are so appreciative and excited about this. But now that the computer has arrived, we have to figure out what to do with it to maximize the learning potential that it brings. Since math and reading are areas my students find challenging and are also subjects that are key to their future success, I think CDs with enrichment programs would be a wonderful addition to our class. If we were to acquire computer software that focuses on the reading and math skills my students need to improve, then my kids could make use of the new computer and learn in fun and interactive ways. Not only will it improve their math and reading, but using programs like the ones I have requested will also increase the computer literacy of my children. Overall, these supplies will be very beneficial to them.
Math and reading are the building blocks of education.
The ability to read is essential in our society today. My children are already years below grade level in reading, and as well as math. They need every intervention they can get to help them make the educational progress they so desperately need to make. Technology that focuses on building skills in math and reading is exactly what they need! So, please, help make this dream a reality and make our computer an excellent learning tool.
