Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As an inner city educator working with students at the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum, nothing is more rewarding than instilling in them the belief that what they do in class really matters. Faced with generational poverty, it would be easy for my students to become apathetic and adopt the notion of "what's the use."' Yet, nothing could be further from the truth for these hardworking fifth graders.
Day in and day out, regardless of their challenges, my students continue to dig in and always put their best foot forward.
Our school is one of the most ethnically diverse schools in the Philadelphia region. Our students come from a variety of different cultural and economic backgrounds representing many third world countries. As a Title 1 school, all of our students take part in the free or reduced lunch program. Students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Arabic. Although many of our students are academically successful, there are many that struggle to achieve even the most basic level of academic success.
My Project
My school comprises grades kindergarten through 8th grade with a population of roughly 600 students. A significant percentage of our students have very no access to computer technology outside of school. And within school, these students are forced to share the limited computer technology provided by the school district. In essence, my students may gain access to the computer once or twice a week.
My students are held captive by socioeconomic conditions way beyond their control.
Unlike their more fortunate peers, my students rarely, if ever, have the opportunity to travel any further than their inner city neighborhood. As a result, their background knowledge is extremely limited, making it difficult to for new, more sophisticated content to take root. Before I can begin to engage my students in the content demanded by the school district, I've got to provide this background. In addition to providing one-to-one access, including these Chromebooks to my student's available resources will create new dimensions of learning, level the playing field, and open their world.
