Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a title 1 school with 100% eligibility, meaning that ALL students fall below the minimum income level. My kids face many obstacles every day, including poverty, early pregnancy, and gang violence. These obstacles could easily distract any child from succeeding.

My students, however, are VERY committed to success!

In spite of these obstacles, my 6th grade class has made a commitment as a class to not only graduate from high school, but to also graduate from college! In order to help them achieve their ultimate goal of college graduation, we would like to integrate as much writing into the class as possible. Although I teach a math class, students will be required to submit essays that are a minimum of 5 typed pages (a big challenge for a sixth grader!!). In order to minimize excuses as to why this cannot be done, I would like to provide them with a printer and paper so that they all have the materials they need to submit their work.

My Project

It is important to provide students with the most current technology, especially in a math class. Technology piques the interest of my video-game-obsessed students and gives them an increased ability to think more critically in class. I am requesting a net book and printer with toner. My sixth grade students routinely work in groups and currently, we do not have enough net books for each group. It is in the middle grades where students are exposed to technology and equipped with the tools they need to better navigate through more advanced technology in high school and college. Understanding technology is a necessary task in helping them to reach their ultimate goal of college graduation. These materials are truly needed to put our kids on the road to success.

All of my students are encouraged to go to college.

These materials will help to prepare them for college in that I can better promote strong math skills and study habits. I always tell them that if they choose to put in the necessary effort required to succeed, the community will choose to support them in their endeavor. As members of your community, we very much welcome and appreciate your support!
