Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm a special education teacher working in a Title 1 School. This is a low-income area where the majority of my students are underprivileged. My school currently services approximately 8 shelters that vary from homeless to drug rehabilitation centers.
Every day, I come to work realizing that technology will move education farther and faster than ever before.
My students don't have the privilege of coming to school with technological devices and other materials of their own. Although my students face many personal challenges daily, I try to provide them with the best education possible. I want them to have access to all materials/resources that will allow them to learn and grow independently as the year evolves. My students mean the world to me! Their happiness is my happiness! With the help of the Donorschoose community, my students will have the chance to explore the innovations of the 21st century.
My Project
These computers will allow my students to have access to online texts and academic supports that will enhance student learning. It will provide my newly relocated students from Puerto Rico the opportunity to access websites such as Imagine Learning, and Accelerated Reader that will help build their Literacy skills and boost up their confidence. Leaving a country behind, making new friends, and learning a new language can be overwhelming and hard. I can only imagine how hard it must be for my students to come into a class where they know nothing and no one. After experiencing the monstrosity of Hurricane Irma, I can completely understand how they feel. As an educator, I would not like for any of my students to go through this. That is why I am doing the best I can to ensure that these students have access to all I can possibly provide them with. Coming from a neighborhood and school that has very limited access to resources, books, and online materials these computers will provide a lifetime opportunity for my students. They will help them access books, information, district mandated programs, and educational websites that will help build their schema and self-esteem.
They will learn how to become skilled users of modern technology in a time where technology is imperative for both success and growth.
This donation will help my students access the necessary background knowledge needed to move forward in school.
