My Students

In my class my students write by hand but with the changes in education, it is key that they know how to use a computer and how to type. The assessments that accompany Common Core standards ask that students type. However, many of my students have never touched a keyboard unless it's on a phone.

My students are middle school 7th/8th graders who are from low income families.

They do not have access to computers or have never been taught the basics of computer usage. I want them to write essays and be able to publish them. However, we do not have the means to do that. I am also fearful that they will not do well on the standardized tests that will be given to them at the end of the year because they have no experience with computers but they must take a computer writing exam.

My Project

I want my students to learn to type. At the end of the year, they will be required to take a writing exam on computers, however, many of them have never touched a computer. They will fail unless they get experience with a computer and time to practice typing. My students need three computers to practice writing and typing. Many of my students only know how to send texts, they do not know how to type essays.

My project will make a difference because students will get computer experience which will help them when they get to high school.

It's also a skill that could help them get a job one day.
