My Students

We are proud to be authorized in the PYP, MYP, and DP offering an IB education from K - 12.

There are only 25 schools in North America and the Caribbean who hold this distinction.

Our high school is one of the most ethnically diverse schools in Chicago (27% white, 28% Hispanic, and 33 % Black, and 7% Asian). forty-seven percent of our students are eligible for free or reduced-priced lunch. Eleven percent of our students have Individual Education Programs (IEPs) and receive support in co-taught classrooms as well as extra resource time. Half of our students come from our elementary school and the other half apply from all over the city.

My Project

My students have a hard time seeing how data collection and data analysis can be used to benefit their everyday lives. In physics, we have many abstract experiments about theoretical spheres hitting theoretical cubes with hypothetical forces, however students will never make the connection that we can measure the real world unless we measure real world motion and do video analysis of the data. Students will improve their media literacy by communicating and interpreting various types of data.

My students also need the computing power to do video analysis on everyday objects.

With video analysis, students will be able to analyze the motion of their everyday lives. Students can analyze the position, velocity, and acceleration of a basketball, baseball, frisbee, player, dancer, or gymnast. Any student interest that can be captured on video can be analyzed through the lens of physics.

With these computers, our 9th grade students will be tackling algebra and physics for the first time and every visual representation of the mathematical and physical models will help them learn more quickly. The desktops will allow students to conceptualize PhET models which illustrate resistance in a wire, nuclear fission, lasers, the photoelectric effect, and many more models which are difficult to see without a PC.

The computers will also be used to fuel student creativity in physics. Students will be able to create video presentations and computer programming models to communicate their knowledge in the digital media space. Students will also create websites as academic online portfolios to share their best work so they can inspire others while keeping a record of their achievements. Students will analyze the scientific claims of others and communicate their own claims with evidence on their websites.

Students will understand how data is collected and how to present data in an honest way.
