Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When you walk into a 9th grade classroom at my high school, you might expect to hear students conversing in one of ten different languages. You might find students giving each other feedback on an argumentative essay, or working together on a science lab. One thing you may not find, however, are students working on computers. In today's world, computer literacy is essential to success in both college and career--yet many students at my high school, a Title I school in Brooklyn, lack the opportunity to develop these skills.
The majority of our students come from low-income communities and are current or former English Language Learners.
Many of them have unmet learning needs. They are bright, inquisitive, and determined to succeed despite the many challenges that stand in their way. Yet without access to resources, the achievement gap between them and their more affluent peers continues to grow. By providing our students with daily access to functioning, modern computers, we will be able to equip them with college and career readiness skills in an increasingly technology-driven society.
My Project
Many of our 9th graders come to high school without an email account. Aside from their cell phone, many do not have access to technology at home. In order to prepare them for the rigorous demands of college and career, it is essential that they are interacting with computers on a daily basis.
Our classrooms are inclusive, which requires significant differentiation in order to meet all of their unique needs.
With computers, we will be able to provide students with targeted resources and materials that will drive their success regardless of their literacy level upon entry to high school. They will use Google Drive, Newsela, Schoology, Audiobooks, and many other resources in order to accelerate and monitor their own learning.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
