My Students

My students are in need of laptop computers to help them get the most out of their education. My school is committed to the education of their students and is very active within the community.

My students need computers to help bring our science classroom into the 21st century.

So much of science is invisible to the naked eye, but computers in the classroom allowed me to make the invisible visible.

I teach 7th grade in Bayside, NY. Many of my students are new to this country and speak a variety of different languages. Each student brings his or her own diverse background and experiences to the classroom. But the one thing they all have in common is their passion to learn. I try to utilize many different learning techniques and strategies to best reach all the students. The ability to do research in the room or watch a relevant video on the topic will only enhance what my students can get from a lesson.

My Project

Computers in the classroom every day would be an amazing addition to any science classroom. They will have the ability to make the invisible visible. So much of science cannot be seen with the naked eye. But computers will have the power to bring the world of atoms or cells alive for my students.

We will use the computers to complete virtual labs, web quests, research on all topics, and review activities.

The computers will allow my students to become more independent learners. It will also allow them to learn at their own speed. They will complete student-led station labs that will let them explore on their own and with their peers.

Throughout the year I try to use computers as often as possible. The problem is that there is one cart with 17 computers for about 25 teachers to share. That makes it very hard to get the computers on a regular basis and then the students also have to share. These computers have been so overused. In fact, when I had them just yesterday, I had to make a list documenting how many keys were missing on each computer's keyboard. Some were missing up to 14 keys. When technology is limited in the classroom or damaged, it makes it much harder to make learning an interactive experience. With computers on a regular basis, the students will be able to complete a variety of different web quests that will take them on a safe journey through the internet on specific science topics. Learning is always enhanced when approached from a variety of ways.
