My Students

My students are a diverse group of students taking Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles. Some of my students come into the class with no coding background and some come into the class having had coding as a hobby for years. The students in this course are representative of the students at our school.

All of students in AP Computer Science Principles are learning 21st century skills that can transfer to success in the workforce and college classes.

The students enjoy coding and learning about the basics of computer science.

My Project

In computer science it is good to have students do some hands-on unplugged activities to help them make connections in their learning and also to provide an opportunity to collaborate with their peers.

The students will use the mini motor, batteries and battery holder as well as craft supplies to build a silly robot that has a cup for a body and can draw.

The completion of this project will help students to understand the inner workings of how a robot works. Students will later extend this learning to the programming of robots.

The students will use post-it notes to create large pixel art that will help them to understand that images contain a lot of data and that this data can be compressed. The students will then extend this learning to the creation of digital images.

The 3rd hands-on project that these supplies will provide is the creation of binary bracelets, that will help students to understand how to convert their name into binary code.

The purpose of completing unplugged activities in computer science is to give students a deeper understanding of concepts that they can transfer to digital knowledge.
