My Students

I teach four levels of computer science and each course involves project-based learning. My students are engaged and excited to see how computer science connects to other disciplines. Our computer science department focuses on equity-based instructional practices to address the needs of all learners. Our goal is to get all students engaged in computer science in ways that address their interests so that they can take computer science beyond the classroom!

My students are excited to talk about new developments in computer science and what sort of projects we can work on!

They often do further independent research on the projects because they have been hooked. The excitement translates to them taking not just one, but multiple computer science courses throughout their high school career.

My Project

These materials will be used to demonstrate to students how computer science is used in the creation of adaptive devices. At various levels of computer science, we will learn how the signal is generated and how the signal can be used to code an Arduino to use the claw as an adaptive device.

Our goal will be to learn how computer science can be used to help the community, at this point with regards to adaptive devices for those with a limited range of motion.

This project can also be used by our physiology and PE courses to better understand how the brain and muscles communicate together. My students will create presentations to teach their peers about the system. The backyard brains bundles will be used in combination with Arduinos that we currently use in the classroom. Students will learn how to code the Arduino to control parts of each bundle.
