This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school has a law theme and each class is invested in teaching content as well as 5 legal skills: advocacy, research, argumentation, negotiation, and critical thinking.
All students at our school come in with the expectation of attending college, yet a number of these students enter with low scores in math and reading skills.
Students work hard to overcome this obstacle. In keeping with the theme of the school, students are exposed to legal skills in each classroom but also visit law offices for reinforcement.
My Project
Students will use chromebooks to focus on one of the 5 legal skills—critical thinking. In using the technology, students will begin an introduction to computer science education using Hour of Code tutorials. Peeking over a shoulder of a student I envision students starting to code by programming a figure to move right, left, up and down. Moving from there, students will combine actions, add other motions, change scenes and even add sound to video games.
Critical thinking skills are vital to being productive citizens in our society.
The critical thinking skills gained in high school will help to prepare my students for their future as undergraduate students. They will be prepared to have confidence in their thinking. The students will also be exposed to an under-represented career field where they may have never had exposure.
