My Students

Buzzing, clicking, switching, whirring, ILLUMINATION! I would love for the first days in my Introduction to Computer Programming course to be filled with the fun, sensory experiences that come along with successfully designing and building circuits and eventually, programming computers!

I teach three totally terrific middle school classes in what is considered an 'economically-disadvantaged' school.

Many of my students balance very real world responsibilities such as caring for younger siblings and commuting far distances to school. My students are intrepid explorers of the world around them and this year I am charged with teaching an Introduction to Computer Science course, along with my courses in mathematics. I would like for the course to focus in the beginning on the foundational captivating experiences that come along with building working circuits, though acquiring materials for a course such as this in my school is a tremendous challenge. Extra money is not something that my students and their parents/guardians regularly have, if ever, so I try to keep requirements on struggling families in the beginning of the school year to a minimum. It can be very intimidating to families to provide sufficient school materials for their children, even in public school!

My Project

I want to give my students the gift of truly understanding the electronics and mathematics relevant to computer programming. At the start of the course, we will build working circuits that can be switched on and off to activate lights, motors, radios, chargers, buzzers, sensors, and other electronics. I want my students to become young computer engineers by the close of the course, building a knowledge base of how computers work and how to influence the operations of circuits. I am requesting the physical materials for building circuits, switches, lights, and other essentials for us to start designing and building prototypes of interactive creations. Also included in this grant is an Arduino starter kit, the perfect assembly of materials to begin actually building and programming computers!

I want my students to have an interactive experience in their world.

By donating to this project, you will be giving students the power to harness and shape electronic circuits that they actually design! You will effectively be turning my classroom into a working electronics and computing studio, helping give students a knowledge base relevant to success in the college courses and careers that they will be competing for shortly!
