This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have developed a pilot program at an inner city High School in East L.A. to teach computer/technology skills to students with learning disabilities. Most of these students neither own computers or know much about using them.

While a cart of MacBooks was purchased by our school for this project, our district sets student computers to delete all data upon rebooting. When I requested funding for hard drives, I was told that due to the state budget cuts, they could not afford this. (Granted, they had just spent about $30,000 on the computers, so the price of the hard drives seems nominal by comparison, but welcome to LAUSD.) Because we plan to use iMovie to create student videos and GarageBand to create Podcasts, we will need a substantial amount of external memory for each of the three classes.

We are requesting 3 500GB external hard drives on which the students can save their multi-media projects. These items will benefit students by giving them access to create and save projects that few, if any, have access to create outside of this class.

There has been great student interest in using these computers. While we thus far have been working on simple projects that can be saved on pen drives, as the year progresses we hope to do more elaborate projects which will not be possible without this equipment.
