This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a school on the southwest side of Chicago. Our school has a large population of Latino students whose first language is Spanish. In the years I have worked as a teacher, the students I have had come in every day with a lot of energy, with many questions and ready to learn.
Fourth grade is a very exciting year for students.
Throughout the fourth grade, students learn to become independent learners. Furthermore, throughout the fourth grade, students become exposed to many different text genres and develop many reading and writing skills.
One of the very exciting things about being in fourth grade is that students become independent readers. By the end of fourth grade, students leave having been exposed to many different genres of books. They also leave the fourth grade loving books and having learned new reading and writing strategies.
My Project
This year we have been using the reading comprehension daily journal from Lakeshore Learning. We have been using these since December of last year. The students really love it, it has become a morning routine in our classroom. As soon as we do the pledge of allegiance and eat our breakfast we take out our two journals. However, the journals were used from previous years and we only have a few weeks left until we complete the journals. Since the use of the journals I have seen increased growth in their reading scores. The journals cover many strategies, among them prefixes and suffixes, conjunctions and many more.
Because I saw so much success in using these journals I will be implementing the use this upcoming school year.
I am asking for a class set of reading comprehension daily journals from Lakeshore Learning. When this journal was used this school year I noticed students reading comprehension skills increased from the beginning to the end of the school year.
