Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My second grade students understand that "real reading" is text plus thinking. Comprehension is key to being a strong reader! I teach in a school that consists of 80% second language learners. My students are eager to learn and to be prepared for the world ahead of them, but because of limited support from home for a variety of reasons, their in school experiences need to be rich and many so that they will be well prepared readers.
I run a program called Readers Workshop with my students. They love finding a little nook and reading their just right books that they have chosen. The key to making this program successful is allowing the child to choose a book that interests them and making sure they understand the various reading strategies and have ample practice with that strategy before trying it during their own personal reading time.
The materials such as the reading activities I am requesting give the students many chances to apply their understanding of various reading strategies and practices. The fiction and nonfiction activities meet the needs of their diverse interests and the mysteries turn the students into problem solvers or "little detectives." This builds interest in reading!
Your generous donation will help my students for years to come to be strong readers and thinkers. When children feel successful as readers, picking up a book becomes a choice rather than a chore.
