I am a new teacher in an A+ Arts Magnet school of choice that offers academic learning with an art, music, drama, and dance emphasis. Whether the low-income, high-poverty, neighborhood student or the student that applied to attend just for the arts, everyone is benefiting from the hands-on, engaging learning opportunities that our magnet school is offering.
But for creative and captivating lessons, it takes capital and even though my students are rich in love and excitement, they need help to afford the resources.
I can't rely on family members to send in everything we need and I don't want capital to stop us from finding the most inventive way to learn new material and demonstrate that knowledge. So as I teach my students about compassion, responsibility and helping others, I pray that you will join us on our path.
My Project
Reading is a valuable part of everyday life for each one of us. For a 1st grader, it can be very challenging. Words don't always sound out like they are spelled and once you have FINALLY finished reading a passage, do you even know what it was all about?
It's imperative to create a love of reading at this early age rather than frustration!
I believe that fun centers where students work together is the best way. The Tower of Sight Words Complete Set will give students an opportunity to read sight words while playing the game of Jenga. For more advances groups, they can use the words in a sentence. As students use the Flip & Read Sight-Word Sentences, they will be working to master 100 different sight-words while creating fun rebus sentences and reading them aloud. The Mach & Sort Language Quickies Complete Set provides eight different games per set for phonics, vocabulary, language skills, and reading comprehension. While using the Early Comprehension Story Wheels, students will interact with twenty-five wheels to build knowledge of identifying main characters, setting & events, using illustrations & details to describe key ideas. The Boost Comprehension! Small-Group Teaching Center is comprised of eight specific strategy teaching kits with 6 copies of each fiction or nonfiction text and twelve vocabulary cards. Skills include reading comprehension, main topic & key details, identifying feelings, comparing & contrasting, point of view, character study, story elements and retelling.
With these wonderful center stations, my students should be able to excel as they grow individually and as a class.
