This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students make up a very talented group of high school STEM students. They all plan to pursue careers in STEM - related fields, and projects like this helps by giving them a head start. They are very special because they have been together since middle school, and their work ethic makes them excel at whatever they put their minds to.

They are always striving to learn new things that not only apply to robotics and academics, but also in their future lives.

For example, a member on our team, is always taking time to research out of school to gain a better understanding of what he is dealing with as well as spread his knowledge with the rest of the team. For instance, he went home after having trouble with designing the arm and researched the issue in depth. He then returned the next day and knew more than even I knew about arm design!

In addition to that, another student always wants to help the team more by learning new things and enhancing his knowledge and understanding of robotics. For instance, he spent a lot of time outside of school learning the different functions in the programming language.

My Project

While walking around the cafeteria I started noticing the enormous amount of waste that is produced everyday just in our school. I am talking dozens of trash cans full of left overs that end up going to the dumpster every lunch meal.

What I am proposing is the creation of an effective composting program in our school.

Some of the challenges that I see is that when I inspected the trash cans I noticed that there is a lot of Styrofoam cups and food trays that counts for approximately 40% of the volume of the waste, so the implementation of new biodegradable materials for the utensils and food trays should be an integral part of the project; I also think that the use of composting worms also would aport a great deal of efficiency to the process.

Our city is growing and we need to be more conscious about the management of our waste. The use of composting may help in promoting a more environmental and economic approach to that growth.
