Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are sixth, seventh, and eighth graders at a K-8 charter school in West Covina. Everyone says it, but we mean it the most: We teach some amazing kids! They are natural born scientists, asking questions and working to find answer to the world around them. We get to see them grow and progress from their first year in our junior academy to the moment when they head off to high school.
Our school is classified as Title I, with many of our students receiving free lunches.
School is a sanctuary for many of our students and anything that we can do to help make this space more engaging and welcoming, we will.
My Project
Every year our students spend time learning about ways to help reduce their environmental impact. One topic that they always are drawn to is the issue of food waste on campus. Many have suggested various campaigns to try and reduce food waste but one idea has come up over and over again: Composting.
Allowing our students to actively engage in changing their food waste into soil the school or community can use will allow them to see their individual impact on the environment.
This tumbler composter and worm composting bin systems were chosen to show that there are different options available and to familiarize students with different means of composting.
Encouraging students to take on leadership and ownership of the environmental impact of our campus can only yield positive results!
