Compost Chemistry Learning to Cultivate Minds and Earth
Help me give my students composting bins and educational books to deepen their understanding of climate awareness and environmental care in chemistry, complemented by motivational posters to inspire action.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I love my students’ resilience and curiosity, especially given the challenging environment of our low-income urban community, close to Skid Row and surrounded by factories. Each of my students shows an incredible capacity to learn and grow despite these hardships. By integrating composting bins, such as the worm composter and solid waste, and educational books into our curriculum, I hope to provide hands-on learning experiences that not only teach them about chemistry and environmental science but also empower them to make tangible changes in their community. Our goal is to transform our school into a beacon of sustainability, where my students can create eco-friendly gardens that bring life and beauty to our urban landscape. These resources will enable them to understand and apply composting techniques firsthand, fostering a sense of stewardship and pride in their surroundings. My students are special because they embody hope and determination; they are not just learning about science they are preparing to lead a greener future right from our own community.
