Our 600 student school doesn't compost cafeteria waste. At the same time, we have two student planned and managed gardens. That's about 20 beds total that we need to keep fertile!
These composting labs will allow my student gardeners to observe and experience the composting process on a small scale during the winter.
Understanding the science behind composting will help them educate other students and create an engaging cafeteria food waste collection program to benefit our gardens.
Developing compost in the winter will also keep the students engaged in the care and nurturing of the gardens they care so much about. It will remind us of the promise and hope of spring!
