My students each need two composition books (one for math and one for science) in order to create a daily math journal and an interactive science notebook.

A change is a comin'!
I teach 6th grade math and science at the lowest performing middle school in North Carolina (but not for long!). Our students come to us from a neighborhood with a National Crime Index of 8 (10 is the highest) and 98% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. We have come under new, energetic and optimistic leadership and are on the road to collectively providing a high quality education to this group of burgeoning scholars!
The scholars at my school are not the one-dimensional statistics revealed above. Yes, they must deal with the myriad of issues associated with generational poverty, however, they still arrive at school everyday eager and ready to learn...ok, most days! What my scholars bring to the classroom in spirit, unfortunately, they cannot afford to bring in material goods.
If we want to turn the school from the lowest performing school to the school with the highest growth, we need the materials to do so. My scholars have had little experience with the rigor and challenging curriculum seen at higher performing schools...but that's about to change!
This year all scholars in math and science will be responsible for creating and maintaining written journals. Not only will they learn to take notes in each subject, but they will also copy sample problems, complete in-class labs and complete written reflections on each lesson to add depth to their understanding.
Many of our scholars have never been taught study skills, and the notebooks containing all their content notes and in-class work, provide a perfect means through which to teach study and test-taking skills. The composition book is vital to this effort. Traditional spiral notebooks come apart and the papers tend to tear and get lost, the composition books are a little more expensive but the bindings are sewn so that the papers don't come loose and fall out.
You can play a role in the transformation from mere students to academic scholars at my school. With your generous donation, every scholar in my classroom will have both a math and a science notebook. While a notebook of paper may not seem like a powerful tool, in the right hands and with the right direction it can bring about remarkable results!
