My students need a monitor, printer and ink in order to make an existing computer hard drive functional. Our students are unable to use some of the existing equipment because it is missing major components.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students at our school are eager learners looking to find a safe and secure place to do so. However, Hurricane Irma caused a disruption in their learning environment and their ability to feel safe.
Our school was heavily affected by Hurricane Irma.
Many rooms were left with water intrusion and damage that has made getting back to normal life difficult. Any funds or availability of items is now being used to make repairs to the damaged caused by Hurricane Irma. I work in a Title 1 school where over 90% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. Our school is located in the heart of one of the lowest socio-economic neighborhoods where many parents do not even speak English. Our students are in need of once again feeling secure and safe in their learning environment. Our students need to know that there are people willing to help and make a difference in their lives.
My Project
The materials will make a difference in our school significantly. Much of the existing equipment we have is incomplete or not fully functional because much of the previous equipment has broken and cannot be replaced. In having a monitor we will be able to hook up the existing hard drives so that they will actual be able to be used by our students instead of sitting in a corner unused. With a wireless printer, we will be able to replace our broken printer and allow all the computers in the classroom to be able to print at the same time. This is especially important as our students do not have printers let alone computers in their homes. Parents cannot afford to even take their children to Office Depot to print projects. They need these items in a location that is not only accessible but will not charge them to use it. We will also be able to teach them new functions such as scanning their in class projects and manipulate them on a computer now that we will have a monitor for a functioning computer.
