My Students
I am a second-year teacher working with about 70 8th graders. We are from a rural area and the majority of my students come from low-income families. As with most teenagers, my students struggle to enjoy reading. I have 25-30 minutes of silent reading time every single class period, because like anything, to be a better reader, you must practice.
Most of the students have grown to enjoy the time, and always ask for longer than those minutes.
However, I am still looking for ways to grow my classroom library. I have been lucky enough to receive some "hand-me-down" books from generous teachers before me, but I would like to build my classroom library with interesting titles that will spark a struggling reader's interest, such as Graphic Novels, Realistic Fiction, and Fantasy/ Sci-Fi!
My Project
Luckily I have received a great deal of books from generous teacher s that came before me in the last year, however with all of the books I have gotten, I have a TON of incomplete series! There's is nothing worse than seeing a student's face fall when I have to tell him or her that I don't have the book he is looking for. Especially if it is a book in the middle of a series that they are really in to!
My focus this year is on silent reading time as a way to expand literacy in my classroom, and I know the best way to keep a young reader interested for an extended amount of time is to give them a book from a series.
If they like the book, you have them interested for at least three book lengths! And for a teacher that teachers primarily struggling readers, I love being able to recommend books to my students and them absolutely love them!
A lot of the material I chose are books that will complete a series I mostly already have books from. There are also a few realistic fiction titles and poetry novels, because I would like to expand my collection of sub genres. I am learning as a teacher that you cannot just put books in your classroom library that you like, so I am trying to expand my horizons.
