Complementing the Classics With Diverse Texts

My Project

I love teaching English! I love talking about texts with my classes, and I am overjoyed when they share stories of how much they love what I have asked them to read. Over the years, I have noticed that my students are less and less excited with the classics they are asked to read. To engage students and help build the critical reading skills necessary in life, I want to pair Shakespeare's classic play, Macbeth, with modern YA novels.

I want my students to participate in reading diverse YA novels as part of Book Clubs that can be paired with Macbeth.

By allowing students choice in the various texts, I feel that students will be more engaged with the character analysis and thematic discussions of this play when discussing similar ideas with their book clubs.

Additionally, I feel strongly that we need more diverse texts in our classrooms. My students are more apt to read a text when they see characters that look like they do and struggle in the ways they do.
